Beyond Academia: Career Perspectives for PhD Holders

Start: End: Location: online
Event type:
  • For doctoral researchers
  • Für Promovierende
  • Workshop
At the end of their PhD graduate students are often confronted with the questions whether to continue pursuing a scientific career or whether to look for other options outside the academic career path. The workshop will give an overview of different job opportunities other than academic research.

Short-term employment, personal reasons or the desire for a change in career are some of the reasons for a professional re-orientation. PhDs often have a very limited knowledge about the various interesting and challenging professional opportunities outside academic research and they do not have a clear perception of their own strengths and competences relevant for these positions. To make a first step towards a career beyond research, it is important to bridge these knowledge gaps.

The workshop will start with a reflection on the own CV to answer questions such as What is the purpose of the CV and What do I need to/want to demonstrate with my CV? A thorough analysis of the past career from an inner and an outer perspective will allow the participants to find out personal strengths and qualifications. We will analyse various job descriptions and the required qualifications and skills. Also personal values, motivations and preferences are taken into account to identify the suitable career path in or outside academia. The participants will learn how to present what they are looking for and how to find support for their next career steps.
