Taking off with MAXQDA: Conducting a research project with qualitative data analysis software | Methods for Humanities & Social Sciences

Start: End: Location: online
Event type:
  • Research, Writing & Publishing
  • Forschen, Schreiben & Publizieren
  • For doctoral researchers
  • Für Promovierende
  • Workshop
The workshop offers a solid introduction into using MAXQDA for both interested researchers and already active users. The software can be used for the analysis of a wide range of empirical data such as interviews, focus groups, journals, diaries, observation protocols, legal documents, public media content, image, audio, and video data. This workshop will focus on the analysis of text.

At the heart of the workshop lies the process of conducting an empirical research project with MAXQDA. The participants will conduct a „one-document research project” based on four interactive exercises that establish a solid understanding of using the software from data exploration to retrieving results.

This way the participants will receive an overview of the software’s foundational functions. This will allow them to combine these functions in an informed way to plan and conduct their own research.

For this course, a licence for the qualitative research software MAXQDA is provided. The participants must use the software to follow along. Previous knowledge of the software is beneficial but not at all required. The course is best taken in combination with “Advanced use of MAXQDA”.

Overview of contents:

  • MAXQDA foundations, from data exploration to analysis
    • Data exploration with memos, segment comments, colour codes
    • Inductive and deductive category formation, coding of data and creating a code system
    • Integration of metadata and using document variables for Mixed Methods research
    • Data retrieval, case- and group comparison and basic data visualization
  • Insights into a completed research project

Goals:

  • Qualification for competent execution of research projects with MAXQDA
  • Foundational knowledge about all essential software functions, including:
    • Using memos, comments, and colour codes
    • Creating, applying, and organizing codes
    • Creating and using document variables for analysis
    • Basics of data retrieval, analysis, and visualization
  • Solid insights in the potential and limitations of the research software
  • Trainer: Andreas Müller
  • Target Group: Doctoral Researchers
  • Sprache: English

This course can be credited with 8 work units for the area „Research, Writing & Publishing“ for the Career Certificate for Doctoral Researchers.
