This hands-on workshop teaches techniques of self- and time management to help you establish routines and realistic schedules – from semester and quarterly planning to weekly and daily plans.

Scientific work is more comparable to a marathon than to a sprint. The success of a doctoral thesis is the result of several years of research, while short-term successes are the exception rather than the rule. This framework of scientific qualification presents particular challenges for self- and time management: realistic time estimation, daily and weekly routines and self-discipline are just a few of these challenges that have to be mastered during a doctorate.

In this practice-oriented workshop, participants learn self- and time-management techniques that help them build work routines and create realistic schedules. They analyse personal time thieves and reflect on the conditions under which they work most productively. In addition, the workshop discusses how to deal with stress and how to maintain motivation and work ability in the long term.

The workshop methods include individual and group work, input and plenary discussions. Participants benefit from exchanging experiences with like-minded people and the trainer. In addition, many useful analogue and digital resources are presented and participants fill their ‘first-aid kit’ with individual home remedies for the setbacks of a dissertation.

Participation requires a preparatory exercise (approx. 60 minutes).

To ensure the transfer of knowledge, a comprehensive, password-protected mind map developed specifically for this workshop will be provided.
