Leadership Skills for the Non-Academic job market – How to lead yourself and others in a challenging environment
- Career in Academia and Beyond
- Karriere innerhalb und außerhalb der Wissenschaft
- For doctoral researchers
- Für Promovierende
- Workshop
Having invested considerable energy and time into years of research and being primarily judged based on their academic achievements, many young academics might not be aware, neither of their talent and experience to lead others, nor of the relevance that leadership has for pursuing a career. In addition, they might not value the many experiences they have made at the university, that could help them to succeed in leadership positions outside academia.
For example, leading yourself, structuring your time and work, and defining your place in a community are the main challenges for every doctoral and pos-doctoral candidate. Similarly, dealing with setbacks at a personal level, managing the challenges and conflicts that arise when working in teams, motivating and assessing other individuals, are all well-known experienes of every young academic.
Particular care and diplomatic skills are required when leading peers and in dealing with a superior. Doctoral candidates will have to master all of these challenges again, when entering the professional world be it consulting, industry, government, or creative services.
